About this pièce
A consistent theme throughout my work over decades has been the exploration and juxtaposition of opposites: thick/thin, full/empty, loose gesture/tight control, complimentary colors. I am also drawn to minimalist designs and expressions, even as, at other moments, I revel in dynamic complexity.

Many of these elements exist in the Jardin du Luxembourg, so this series allows me a broad range of explorations. This particular piece highlights several of those elements: the play of gesture against tight control, and an expression of minimalism. Standing at the basin looking south, you see the wide spaces of the lawns and gravel pathways juxtaposed against the rigid structure of the allées, expressions of gesture versus control, and empty versus full.

In these ways, this piece serves as a delightful metaphor for the perennial contradictions and resolutions in our lives.
