Presentation

A native of Bucks County, Pennsylvania, USA — an area known for its artistic community — my first degree was in Fine Arts from Principia College, in Elsah, Illinois, USA. Subsequently, I earned two Masters degrees from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA: one in Architecture and one in Landscape Architecture. Both disciplines continue to inform my artistic practice as well as my outlook on life in general.

While doing research in 2014 on a sabbatical in France, I noticed that a number of Paris’ green spaces – parks, gardens, and squares – are associated with moments of violence in French history, and yet today, there is little, if any, evidence of that violence, and I became fascinated with that dichotomy.

 

This dynamic became the basis of a project proposed to the French Consulate – a project involving research, new, interpretive artwork, and publication via blog, social media, expositions, and ultimately a book. Titled BVRT – Beauty from Violence, Redemption and Transformation in Contemporary Paris, the project is centered around those green spaces (so far more than 50 out of roughly 500 green spaces), where moments of violence have been replaced by beauty, peace, and relaxation.

The hypothesis is that, in fact, beauty is more durable than violence. For more than 40 years, the play of opposites – thick/thin, colorful/monochromatic, empty/full; precise construction/explosive gestural figuration – has been a consistent theme throughout my work, and that play and interaction continue to structure and inform my ongoing explorations.
